Installation

You can either install a fresh Ubuntu Muslim Edition or convert a standard Ubuntu installation:

Install Ubuntu Muslim Edition from DVD

Download and burn the DVD: download links

Learn how to create a DVD from your newly downloaded file: BurningIsoHowTo

If you can’t download the DVD, you can buy it here.

Then install it as a standard Ubuntu CD (documentation).

Install Ubuntu Muslim Edition from CD

CD 1

Download and burn the first CD (live CD): download links

Then follow this documentation to install it.

CD 2

When your system is installed, download and burn the second CD: download links

To install it:

  • go to “System-Administration-Software sources”
  • click on the “Third Party Software” tab
  • click on “Add CD-ROM” and insert your CD
  • click on “Close”

Then open a terminal window (Applications→Accessories→Terminal) and type in:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install aptoncd-metapackage
sudo aptitude upgrade

Convert a standard Ubuntu installation

:!: Follow these steps if you already have installed Ubuntu on your computer

Convert Ubuntu 8.04

To convert Ubuntu 8.04 (”Hardy Heron”), follow these steps:

Open a terminal window (Applications→Accessories→Terminal), and execute the following command:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Add the following lines at the end of the file:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntume.team/ubuntu hardy main # Ubuntu Muslim Edition
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntume.team/ubuntu hardy main # Ubuntu Muslim Edition

Save the file and close the editor.
Run the following command:

sudo aptitude update

Then install the ubuntume package:

sudo aptitude install ubuntume

Answer ‘Yes’ when needed.
If you want to install the optional package WebStrict (Web Content Filtering tool), just run the following command:

sudo aptitude install webstrict

Finally, restart your computer to apply changes.

Convert an older Ubuntu installation

To convert an older version (Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10), Feisty (7.04), Edgy (6.10) or Dapper (6.06)), follow these steps:
Download this file on your desktop.
Open a terminal window (Applications→Accessories→Terminal) and move to the Desktop directory:

cd ~/Desktop

Make the script executable by running this command:

chmod u+x install-ubuntuME.sh

Then run the script with root privileges:

sudo ./install-ubuntuME.sh

You will be asked to accept the Java license and Zekr terms (disclaimer and Quran translations licenses). The script will install: islamiccal, ubuntume-artwork, ubuntumewcc, minbar, zekr, sun-java6-jre, flashplugin-nonfree.

Then the configuration process will ask you if you want to :

For each question answer yes (y) or no (n).
