Yes, its definitely best to not use the crescent and star.
I like the "Allah" in the centre (perhaps without the puncutation, but with just the letters? At small sizes the punctuation won't be visible anyway?)
Anyway, I like the Allah in the centre but I think around the edges it wouldn't work...
If you look at the edubuntu logo, its not that different from the ubuntu logo. I think having normal circles like the ubuntu logo, but with "Allah" in arabic in the centre would be sufficient maybe?
I dunno I think maybe that wouldn't look as good...just a suggestion. Hopefully someone will come up with a better idea insha'Allah.

Assalam o aliakum
certainly 4 one is the best. I think, if there will be a logo it must be contain moon, star and the Arabic name of ALLAH. Good work.

Akhi the crescent and start are pagan and un-Islamic symbols. They _should_not_ be in the logo, imho.

Asalaamu alikum everyone
Yeah the cresent and star are pagan symbols. Infact I started a graphic design company called MoonstarMedia, I built up the reputation then found this out so I ended it. So it's best to stay away from that from the begining.
Now from a personal opinion, I think all logos are quite poor. Sorry but they are. if you want something I will gladly do you some designs insha Allah.
Just give me a brief if you are interested. As you are a non profit organization trying to help out the ummah, I don't mind doing the work for free. Just contact me if you are interested. |

Nice designs!
May I suggest something? What about using a shahada in the middle like this one:

This is true. Sorry to hear about your business but mashallah also for your adherence to the sunnah. The only thing that represented Islam at the time of Prophet (saw) was the black and white Shahada banners. |

It has a round form, maybe we could use this kind of calligraphic text (a "bismillah" or "allah" text with a round form) to replace the circles in the standard ubuntu logo. _________________ Are you a Muslim? The thing is though, logos should be very simple and an overcomplicated logo can look bad...especially when very small.
Although on the other hand, the Al-Jazeera logo is calligraphic and complicated but still looks good...

I just wanted to add a quick note on the crescent and star, as well the green colour. I personally never use them as symbols (for the reasons mentioned previously), but I've always assumed that it's alright to use them as a distinguishing mark, since now they have been associated with Muslims. However, I looked it up right now and I found some interesting things from a very prominent scholar (Shaykh Muhammad Saalih ibn ‘Uthaymeen):
"The symbol or color that we recommend is bright green.”
Is there any daleel (evidence) for this color?
“No, but people like this color and in the Qur’aan it says (interpretation of the meanings): ‘Their garments will be of fine green silk’ [al-Insaan 76:21] and ‘Reclining on green cushions’ [al-Rahmaan 55:76].”
The crescent is commonly used as a symbol by Muslims to distinguish themselves from Christian groups who use the cross as a symbol. Is it permissible for us to use the crescent as a symbol in our publications and on our banners, to distinguish ourselves from other, non-Muslim groups?
“I do not think this is right, because the crescent was originally a symbol that was placed on graves that were worshipped instead of Allah. We read this in an answer given by some scholars and leaders of Daw’ah. But we could use a picture of the Ka’bah as a symbol, because it is the Qiblah of all Muslims.”" |

Interesting idea...using the Kaba. Sounds good...if you can do it right...hmm
And green was the favoured colour of the Prophet SAW...

Al salamo alaikom.
Actually, Prophet Mohammad used the black color for his Rayah or flag in wars ( Rayat al 3oqab).
Good job everybody, and continue for the better insha2 allah. |

salaam all,
This is my first topic [ replay ] in this site, and I am glad to joining you.
what make me register is the vote. I do agree with My brother [Rashid]. and I believe the logo should be for what we like ubuntume to be. the world of Gad name, we must respect it. I mean, do we think our work is perfect to put the name of Gad on it. And if we think that, when we print the logo on paper what will happen to that paper [you know what I mean]. Instead of that, if we have to put something refer to regional let it [ 1 ] yes the number in Arabic letter. one mean many thing. Like we should work hard to be in first place. it means there is one God...........
stars and hellal............. will the logo should be explain our vision,,,,,,, not 2 be [ Muta'asbeen ] >> it arabic work I don't know what is it mean in English<< anyway, why we do logo and what is the concept of any line or dot in it...........

i'd like to say all logos are just great, but i a bit disagree to put "lafz el glala ALLAH" in a logo
first, we should show some respect to the lafz elgala and not to use it in a commercial staff
second, i'm very concerned wt if u want to print the logo for any commercial event then wt if the logo misused by any way
third, i absolutely disagree to make the logo kinda religious than technical, i think it might not help spreading the UbuntoME
so i'd go for the second logo, it's the most simple and effective one
plz plz plz consider my reasons and think carefully before getting lafz elgalal in such situations
thanks |

I dunno how many of you brothers know but the crescent and star is actually originally a pagan symbol...it was never used by the Prophet (SAW) or the sahaba (ra)...it was actually associated with Islam by the British/Europeans because it was the flag of the ottoman empire but it was never an Islamic symbol but the opposite...
I like the "Allah" in the middle though... I think the shahadah would but appropriate but in small sizes it'd obviously look bad (and would be too much for a logo I think?)
Definitely liking the green though...very nice logo minus the crescent/starts
-Rashid |
I Agree with Rashid, it's never done by the Prophet or the shahaba, i know that islam use moon calendar and use hilal (crescent) as a starting point to start moon calendar, but i never heard that The prophet use the crescent as a symbol....
besides that, some orientalist said that ALLOH is a moon good (this is a really bad interpretation) Subhanallah!...
i think we will not allow this to happens, won't we ?
just a thougt and suggestion, how about imagine the three circle on ubuntu logo as a "head" an then each one of the head is using a "head" cover (i don't know in english language...) in indonesia we call it surban, the other one we use (hat) peci, and the other one is using "head cover" like from saudi....
hey it's just a thought anyway....
like the green so much though... |
as-salamu alaykom,
Again I agree with the bros regarding crescent/moon/stars actually do not represent Islam, and I second the suggestion of brother viek of adding some sort of islamic cap on the 3 heads. Or it can be a cap on one head, a turban on another, a ghutra/iqaal (like those wore in Arabia & Gulf countries) on the third.
Also the beard idea is nice.
I'm not sure, maybe it would be better to avoid using name of Allah in logo as some bros & sisters mentioned just to be in safe side. |
